The Holiday House
I've been getting into the holiday spirit by watching Christmas movies in the evenings when my day is coming to an end. Have you ever watched a movie and it has a house that just makes you happy? It looks so heavenly or luxurious or isolated from crazy neighbors that you're just like take me there now! One of those houses for me is Iris' English cottage in the movie The Holiday (one of my Christmas faves). It looks so peaceful in the country with the snow surrounding it – who wouldn't want to go there?
Another movie home that comes to mind: Jane's Spanish hacienda-style ranch in It's Complicated. Of course that's a multimillion dollar home and just slightly above my current price range lol, but I still love it. Do you have any movie homes you love?
The truth is though, you don't have to live vicariously through movie homes and have millions of dollars to live somewhere you daydream about. This may sound woo-woo, but what makes your home the most endearing is it's energy. Spaces reflect the energy of the people who spend time there, and the things within it. I know you understand what I mean when I say this, because it's like the difference between walking into a sterile doctor's office filled with outdated magazines and crappy music versus your favorite coffee shop with the velvet couches and hanging plants. It's the difference between walking into someone's home and it feeling cold or claustrophobic or full of weird tension, versus walking into someone's home that feels full of life.
This is how I want you to feel if you walked into my home: warm, down-to-earth, cozy. Somewhere you could spend a weekend in and leave feeling refreshed. One time my friend said to me, as she curled up on my couch with a mug of coffee in her hand ready to start a movie marathon, “I love coming to your house, it's always so cozy.” That made me so happy to hear. If your friend came over to your house right now, what compliment would you love to hear?
I want you to think about this compliment. I want you to think about what feeling you want to evoke when someone walks into your home, and the experience you want them to have there. Close your eyes and let yourself picture this place and how you feel knowing it's a reflection of you.
It doesn't have to be spotless. It doesn't have to be perfectly decorated or have everything lined up in neat rows and labeled. It doesn't even have to be your forever home.
Creating this place full of feel good energy is always attainable, no matter where you live.
Next time you step into your home, how does it make you feel?
Does it drain your energy or give you life?
If it's not giving you life, how's that impacting you?
I want you to picture having that home your friend compliments you on, and that makes you say “who wouldn't want to hangout here?” Do one thing today that will make it a reality. Get rid of that too tight jacket you only hold onto because it was expensive and you haven't worn it yet. Start working on repurposing that furniture you've been meaning to do. Order a beautiful leather photo album to put all of your favorite pictures in so they're not just on your phone (this is actually something I'm planning to do in the new year). Just pick one thing to get you closer to that dream home, and start doing it today ✨
